Still groggy from a sleep that seemed to have lasted forever, Weasel stumbled through the Endless Forest. One thing he hated about ghosts - they did not care much about time. Whenever his Gengar took control, Weasel could experience blackouts that lasted hours, days, or even weeks. He wondered what the date was, and why he was in the forest.
His watch had stopped working. That was worrisome. He rubbed a hand across his forehead, trying to shake off the drowsy feeling.
His clothes felt dusty. Luckily, he still had all his possessions. His trusty walking cane - he wasn't the youngest of the bunch, which hid a thin saber inside. He never went anywhere without his neat collection of knives and saber.
So, the Endless Forest. There had to be a reason why his Soulmate had brought him here. The two didn't always see eye-to-eye, but both had similar goals. Power and immortality. Perhaps it had something to do with the Mother Tree?
Still, that was no excuse to drop him head first in the Endless Forest before sulking off again. But there was little Weasel could do to punish the Gengar. Except eat a lot of Garlic. Even ghosts hate garlic.
Weasel shrugged and decided to play along with the plans, stepping into the dark woods.

Ariel didn't really believe in fate. Not many in her family did; they were clever folk, to be sure, but not the kind to dally in fantasy sorts of things like 'a greater purpose' and meanings hiding behind everything that happened. Though it was true, Ariel did wonder sometimes. How could you not? As was second to human nature, she debated. Could there, possibly, be something more to everything that happened - even though it was entirely implausible and unconventional to think so?
Well, not entirely. People thrived off of sweet, romantic stories where the otherwise impossible happened on what seemed to be a daily basis; so why not she? Ariel supposed it was because she was entirely cynical, if not a little wary, of such fancies. It had been a long time ago that the child within her had been dashed out with little hope of returning. Perhaps some day, when things were said and done. But now? Not likely.
It wasn't in her job restrictions to be fanciful. She was a researcher, a scientist. Abelard informed her of such whenever it seemed she was drifting from such a mindset. 'You are a scientist, Ari, not a little girl,' he would tell her, gently. 'It is your job to find fact among false. Never forget that.'
So she didn't. And there was no doubting Ariel was dedicated to her job; no doubt in the very least.
So here she was, in the middle of the Endless Forest, probably lost and not really caring. She was too astounded by the wonders that surrounded her at that moment; the glorious thrumming of life than enveloped every inch of the air that she breathed in. Worlds upon worlds survived with each other, within each other, so that she could hardly fathom where to begin. Where to start her research? Where to start on anything?
Abelard rested at her feet, clearly content to let her muse and blink in wonder at everything around her. It was no bother to him; he was not the scientist, but rather a companion happy to guide her along the straight and narrow. After what happened last time he neglected to do that, he wasn't going to let it happen again.
But suddenly, Abelard could tell that they weren't alone; and Ariel could, too, pausing in her wondering to glance around. Were those footsteps? No, she must have been mistaken - but there they were again, and more sure as ever Ariel found that someone else was in the forest. Perhaps, then, another researcher? If so, she had competition. But she thought maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have company in this big forest, all alone.
"Hello?" she called out, tentatively, trying to keep her voice from being too loud and scaring away potential subjects. "Is someone out there?"

Weasel blinked, a voice calling out from the endless trees. A female. Not a pokemon voice, except perhaps a clever Chatot, but he doubted that. Stopping in his tracks, he turned on his heel towards the sound.
This was an interesting development. He cocked his head slightly, deciding it was better to take notice than to stay here. The ghost was already driving him nuts with idea's of scaring the girl to death. Part of him wanted to give in, see if he could get her to wet herself- but that was just plain tactless.
Maybe she knew the way to the Mother Tree. He poked his head around a corner to spot the young girl and the Whimsicott. It was a Soulmate, that much was clear. They gave off a certain vibe.
"There is." Weasel replied to her question if someone was there. Weasel leaned against the tree, the cane in one hand, the other fiddling quietly with his thin mustache. "Not something you see every day- a young girl on her own in the Endless Forest. Mind you- I don't come here that often, so I wouldn't state I'm an expert on such things." Weasel reasoned. He had a clever voice, a rich-boy's accent that was hard to get rid of, even now he was nearing his forties.
Even behind his clever suit and proper manners lay a lurking, dangerous creature. Being without a -visible- Soulmate was unnerving enough in these times, and to add that Weasel gave of a vibe of preditorial delight made him someone not easily trusted.

Suspicious indeed. What was a strange man - carrying a cane, with his upper-class accent and fancy (if not a bit dusty) clothing - doing trampsing around the Endless Forest without a pokemon in sight? Of course she knew not everyone had soulmates, but if this was the case with this tall fellow, then she had every reason to be more wary than with any normal passerby.
Some people without soulmates were just sad, in the sort of sense that isn't really a danger to anybody. They mourned the loss of their soulmate because it was a part of them that had passed. But some people without soulmates were the other kind of sad; the sort of sadness that warps and gets mangled and twisted in their anger. Those people, Ariel thought, were the most dangerous; not the sad-sad ones, not the angry-angry ones, but the sad-angry ones. There was something ten times worse about getting violent over the death of something so dear to you.
Ariel herself couldn't imagine living without Abelard. She didn't think she'd want to. Through all of the bruises and cuts and tears, he had been the one thing that kept her going - even though he had felt it, too. If anything happened to her Whimsicott soulmate, she didn't think she'd be able to do much of anything.
But back to the matter at hand. Here was Ariel, tentatively unprotected, in the presence of a strange man who appeared to be without a soulmate. At least, as far as she could tell. The young woman tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, holding her notebook to her chest as she surveyed the man before her very carefully. Yes, indeed; he was a sketchy sort of fellow, but his ulterior motives she could not discern. All she could tell at this point was that she felt like the situation was suddenly far more dangerous than a scientific foray into the woods.
'He's not like us, Ariel,' Abelard murmured through their link. 'He's not without a soulmate, but something is - different.'
All the more reason to be wary, she supposed, especially when Abelard said the word 'different' with such expression.
"It may seem strange," Ariel replied, after the man had spoken and she had taken her time calculating him, "but a young girl who can handle herself is welcome in the Endless Forest." She paused, tilting her head a bit. Still no soulmate in sight. "What is a man like you doing out here, then?" she queried after another brief moment of calculation. Certainly he wasn't a researcher; no researcher would dress so atrociously for an expedition into a place like the Endless Forest.

Weasel eyed the two calmly, still leaning against the tree. The Whimsicott seemed the lazy type, not easily motivated to action. But still, it was better to have a relaxed Grass Soulmate than a bothersome Ghost with a mind of his own taking over your body.
He didn't reply to her question right away, considering it a moment or two. "There is a Mother Tree in this forest, is there not? I was hoping to gaze upon it." He replied. It wasn't really an answer to why he was here - but it was a goal at least.
"Have you seen it?" He asked, pushing himself away from the tree. He leaned on his cane. After a particularly violent incident years ago, his knee had never really been the same.

The forest was relatively quiet, it seemed. The two Pokemon had just emerged from their den, two brothers ready to find something delicious to munch on in their beautiful forest home. The first stepped out into the clearing, raising his head, his ears focused on every sound in the still woods surrounding him. The second stood close behind, just as alert as the first.
The sound of a voice a short distance off caused both Stantlers to turn their gaze off toward the two humans, standing just on the other side of the clearing. The younger pushed past the elder, curious as to what two humans were doing in the middle of the woods, but the elder tossed his head, his impressive antlers barring his younger brother from going too much further.
"No," the elder grunted, "They are intruding on our land. We are proud Pokemon--it is our duty to drive them off, for the safety of our family."
Pawing at the ground, the elder Stantler lowered his antlers, ready to charge the pair. Following his brother's lead, the younger did likewise.
Hopefully the two humans would turn in time to see the pair of angry Stantlers charging them!

Later, Ariel would look back on this whole situation with a bit of a sigh. She should have been paying attention; it wasn't like the Endless Forest was necessarily a welcoming environment. Behind the layer of shining life, there were dangers that lurked. Granted, some where less dangerous than others, but it was still a bit of a stretch to come completely unarmed into a forest.
Luckily, she wasn't unarmed. She was just distracted by a suspicious man who was definitely not dressed for walking around the forest, and who seemed to be more than he initially let on. Ariel did not pride herself on being able to read people very well, but she knew enough to tell when someone was hiding something. Or just keeping something tucked away.
But for the time being, that wasn't important. What was important was that something was different. A flush of Pokemon darted from the brush a bit away behind Ariel, a bit of a thundering noise beginning to rumble in the forest a distance away. "Abelard?" she whispered, turning to see what had caused such a disturbance in the otherwise peaceful forest. That was when she saw the two very angry Stantlers heading her way - and with every intention of making sure she didn't encroach upon their territory for much longer.
And they were very close.
Ariel didn't have much time to think or say anything; in fact, it was Abelard who acted first, using Safeguard to shield them both - and perhaps the man behind them - from the initial attack.

"A man like me?" Weasel returned, raising an eyebrow. Really, was he such an odd-ball? He adjusted his glasses and opened his mouth to answer when he too, noticed the two angry deer storming them. He tilted his head a little, a grin forming on his lips.
And then, just as he was about to counter the attack, Abelard jumped forward, guarding them with a safeguard. It wasn't anywhere as strong as a Reflect or Barrier. Weasel doubted it could hold them.
As much as he liked to see others solve his problems, this was a lady. And really, what kind of a gentleman was he if he didn't step in and assist her?
"Stay back." He said, taking her wrist and pulling her aside as the combined force of the wild pokemon came charging at them.
Weasel's wrist was cold, like a vampire. Actually, the air around them had suddenly dropped 10 degrees. Weasel stepped forward into the shadows of the trees and blended away into it. A strange fibe sprung forward, aimed at the two brothers. An eerie sound of hypnotism.

The Safeguard did little to protect the two from the charging Stantlers. It provided a little resistance against the first, but shattered easily when the second smashed up against it as well.
The pair of Pokemon continued in their charge, head lowered, ready to attack, when the man stepped forward, using some kind of hypnotism on them. The younger, more nimble of the two fell victim to the Hypnosis, slowing in his charge, eventually stopping and dropping to the ground, fast asleep. The second, also slowing to a stop, looked at his snoozing brother, enraged, and lowered his head, his antlers beginning to glow brightly.
"HOW DARE YOU!" it bellowed at the pair, even if they couldn't understand him. With that, he charged even faster than before, his antlers glowing brighter and brighter as he rapidly approached.

It was obvious they had to act fast. Luckily, spoken words were not needed; it became a game of them versus the Pokemon, not Ariel and Abelard versus The Stranger versus Enraged Pokemon. Instead, Ariel and Abelard were now on the same team as The Stranger, who identified himself to be what she knew only to be the failed splitting of a soul. She knew not what to call him - it wasn't her area of research or expertise - and instead focused only on the current impending danger.
Abelard was not the prime choice for a battling Pokemon. Naturally he had his own repertoire of offensive attacks, but none that were really strong against many Pokemon. It was the distinct disadvantage of Grass-type Pokemon; but there wasn't anything they could do now about it, except act as much as they could when they could.
Ariel, came Abelard's warning voice in her head, and she nodded, grabbing the second Pokeball from her bag, muttering something as she swiftly planned in her head. Every second mattered; she tossed the Pokeball, releasing her Growlithe Charmaine; Fire-type was going to do far more damage, surely!
"Charmaine, use Flamethrower!" she ordered. Charmaine did so, dutifully; the Growlithe leapt forward, releasing a barrage of fierce fire from her mouth directed at the male Stantler. She landed, stumbling a bit, but catching herself as she readied for another attack.

Weasel hissed and stepped backwards. He wasn't as young as he used to be, his body not as nimble. He was taken on the enemies horns and thrown backwards. At the last minute, the Gengar took over the shape of the human, preventing a hard crash against a tree. Instead, the ghost phrased through it.
Still, the psychically boosted attack had been very effective. Gengar rubbed his head and turned the pair of glowing eyes towards Arial. Oh great, she was doing just dandy.
But he had more than one trick up his sleeve. Well, Gengar had no sleeves, but he still enjoyed that expression. He leaped up from the ground, levitating among the treetops, eying the situation.
He swooped down as Arial concerned herself with the oldest of the two. This left Gengar time to feast on the sleeping younger brother. Quietly as a shadow, he leaned over the sleeping Stantler, draining it slowly of all it's dreams.

The younger Stantler lay there, fast asleep, oblivious to the ghost-type hovering just above it. Feeling the Gengar beginning to suck away its dreams, the young Stantler began to witness terrifying nightmares. It groaned slightly in its sleep, trembling, tossing its antlers slightly at some unseen foe.
Seeing his younger brother suffering, the older Stantler almost rushed to knock the Gengar off of him when a stream of flame barely grazed his left side. Turning his gaze to the little Growlithe standing before him defiantly, the Stantler stood where he was, sizing up the small dog Pokemon.
The small orbs on the larger Stantler's antlers began to glow slightly, then a little brighter, then brighter still, until the Stantler shot forth a bright ray of light intended to surprise and confuse the little Growlithe.
