He’d always loved staying late at the laboratory, with nothing more than the rickety hum of the refrigerators and buzz of air conditioning to keep him company. The air was stale with the comforting scent of methanol and plastic, and Tyge took a moment to lean back and soak in his surroundings. The old chair creaked under the shift of his weight, and he hastily leaned forward once more, heart racing at the unexpected jump. ”Stupid chair,” he muttered, standing and stretching his stiff legs. Everyone had left the building a few hours earlier, while he was still preparing his blood samples. With everything centrifuged and chilled, however, he had time to himself. The question of the hour, he mused, was whether to start analyzing the old slides or go home and sleep. So he ran his fingers through his messy hair and stalked down the hallway to the water fountain, tired eyes begging for the latter. Refreshed, he splashed a bit of the super-chilled water into his face and turned to eye Maji. The Dewgong – his soulmate – had, of course, flopped down the hallway after him. ( You know, I could have done that for you. ) ”You know, we don’t really want another rain dance inside the building. As funny as it was the first time…” The Dewgong grinned mischievously, expression devilishly mirrored on the young scientist’s face. The pair sauntered their way back down the narrow hall, Maji waiting patiently outside the door of the small room for Tyge to grab his bag and make sure everything was set for the night. ”Yeah, I’m too tired right now,” he muttered, to the knowing cry of his soulmate. ( How about you hurry up, then? ) ”Nyeh nyeh nyeh,” he mocked her, sticking out his tongue and waggling a finger at her from his forehead. ”How do you even see with that big fat horn?” His response was a clipped aurora beam to the foot; their laughter carried like thunder through the vacant building. Maji rolling awkwardly along in front of him, no doubt lamenting her lack of a quadrapedal stance, Tyge made his way around to the front of the building. The hallway dumped out into a lobby area with a simple security desk – he signed himself out and, building key in hand, began to lock up and ensure all the windows were entirely closed. One weekend, the last person out had failed to complete this simple task – and they’d had hurricane-scale winds and rain to match. Needless to say, the janitorial staff were less than enthused to come back to rather vast puddles of water. ”Alright, you ready to head out?” Dew-gooooong~ |
