[/i]. Would it have mattered?' This is a bit more than a once in a while thought. This is a racing thought. Anyway, back to the storyline here. Megumi continued fostering to Genji's needs. As he began to grow up, he slowly gained a handle on what he was doing as far as the shifting between his two abilities. However, it was revealed that Genji was indeed born deaf. He strained to hear anything fact. It was a known fact to the world that Soulmates showed the true nature of a human being. It made very little sense to Megumi. He acted kind, he acted friendly and decent. Yet, when he shifted he seemed unhappy and destructive. Megumi searched for an answer, however the response she received from anyone she asked was something along these lines, "Your son's true persona is that of his soulmates." Then, Megumi was then typically told that perhaps Genji was only hiding what he really thought, and that maybe as he grew older he would become more and more like his shifted form.

Genji also thinks of this a lot, what the truth was about all of this. "Y'see... once my mother learned that I was somehow just like my alternate form, she decided that it was completely necessary to make it her goal to try to shift me from this path. She tried to shift me from that path. I ask myself, 'what if she succeeded?' " This is true, for Megumi did indeed try to teach Genji how to stay in control. So, as soon as Genji could further understand how to suppress his shifting, he did.
"She thought she had done a good job... but I was young. I was young, and I was quite intelligent. I obeyed her, I acted like I retained every stupid little lesson she tried to get through to me. Tsk... I didn't. I haven't changed much, and I know this for a single reason. I manipulated the fact that she thought that I was still somehow some sort of angel. I tore at that fabric. I posed as an innocent little 13 year old boy. Inside, I felt fully capable of evil." Genji did indeed fool Megumi so perfectly. Megumi felt so accomplished, she felt that she had indeed done a good job in making him completely normal. I wouldn't say that she necessarily made it her goal to strip him of his individuality, however she did indeed try to make him into the "perfect" little boy.
At age 14, Megumi put Genji into a public school into of schooling him at home. Genji was not given the opportunity to do any sort of journey. Instead, he was required to study and learn. Genji quickly fell behind in class. Megumi was alarmed. Genji saw it as his opportunity to defy his parents. He was intelligent and had the capabilities to be among the top of his class, however he didn't do that. Instead, he posed as the kid who could hardly retain any information. Genji continued this for an entire year. "I have told myself this part in so many different ways. I honestly don't know what way is the truth. I'm not sure if I'm lying to myself... or telling the truth, but I didn't know how much I was hurting my mom." Lying to himself? Not necessarily. Megumi blamed his falling behind in class on the fact that he was incapable of hearing much of anything. She blamed his disability. She also blamed the fact that he was a teen-aged boy. Rebellion was so necessary. However, when he came home, he would open books and read them. Something was so incorrect.
His behavior was so contradictory at times. Megumi would never figure it out, however Genji knew it well at this point. Genji was born with the talent to pretend he was different than he really was. Now, this is easy. Kids learned how to pretend at early ages. However, Genji felt no restraints. He could be whatever he wanted, when he wanted. All it took was the motive. Once he had a simple motive, he would place upon himself a different persona. Genji learned how to read lips, and could, to an extent, even act like he wasn't deaf. At 16, Genji mastered his transformations. Genji simply wouldn't transform anymore, in fact, he pledged to himself that he wouldn't. So, he simply suppressed the natural instinct that made him want to transform into the being that he was one with. His innocence remained just one of the personae he hid behind, however in his free time he perfected his ability to act like others. So, he went on "dates" and met with friends more frequently.
Genji decided to try in school, and graduated with the rest of his class. Megumi was so proud of him, and Akuhei was as well. Genji seemed oblivious to their love. In fact, he was oblivious to the fact that he was slowly shutting himself out from them. He found a job at a library. He knew that he wouldn't get the job at the front desk if he was known to be deaf, so he practiced his speech and his ability to read lips. He rarely messed up, and became the front desk librarian. He was the only shifter that worked there, and loved the job to an extent. From this job, Genji learned how to analyze people. He learned how to find out what people hated, and then exploited these things. It was so easy to Genji. The ability to shamelessly be whatever he wanted to be personality-wise gave him an edge. Genji had people loving him, hating him, and others that thought he was the most boring guy to exist. This was what he loved. He had everyone thinking differently about him, and this continued.
One day, at age 20, Genji was fired from his job. Genji didn't know why at first. He had played with his boss enough that she thought that he loved her, and she had a deep crush on Genji. He thought that he could continue the manipulation of this fact to keep his job even if he got himself into some sort of mess. However, he was fired. "I know you are a shifter, Genji. Your kind are being brutally murdered, and soul mates aren't safe anymore. We would like to ask you to leave, please." So, Genji was fired. What did he do? Simple, he returned to his parents. They were growing older, and Akuhei had died of a disease. Genji didn't mind this at all. He wasn't close to his father. However, in order to keep Megumi sympathetic towards him he acted as if he was grieving towards his death. Megumi was a wreck. She was afraid that sooner or later her soul mate would be murdered in an attempt from Team Unifi to "unite" them. Most importantly, she was afraid that Genji was in grave danger. If Genji's identity as a shifter was revealed, he would be murdered.
Genji knew this as well, however was not going to allow himself to die because of the way he was born. Suddenly one day, Megumi's house just outside of Virenya's city was attacked by some vigilantes that claimed they were members of Team Unifi. They successfully killed the Skitty that was Megumi's soul mate. Genji wasn't home at the time. When Genji returned home, Megumi was grief-stricken. Genji realized that this place wasn't safe anymore. The entire region would be made hostile sooner or later. Megumi died when Genji was 21. With no more objectives in his life, he decided that he would need to think of some. Genji couldn't find an objective. He felt so pointless he almost considered suicide, but he didn't. Instead, he decided that he would go back on his own pledge. He would let himself turn into his soul mate whenever it was necessary. He would be whatever he wanted to be as he ventured the land. In the end, he would never be bored. There would always be people to meet, information to gain. In his past he had learned that knowledge was power. He could fight whatever forces got in his way. He could survive any attack by the god forsaken Team Unifi... with knowledge.
How he hoped to obtain this knowledge? Simply enough, he would act like a simple-minded trainer or an adventurer. He would act like whatever it is he wanted to be at any time. Genji had a dream to become the most powerful man in the region through the practical application of the childhood game; pretending.
