"Are we there yet?"
"No."
"How about now?"
"Still no."
"But I'm hungryyyy and there's nothing exciting to look at and--."
"Gabriel Hikaru Grimm, do not make me come back there!"
One had to have a lot of admiration, or indeed sympathy, for the pokemon unlucky enough to be born the Soulmate of someone so often childish as Gabriel Grimm. The Infernape resisted the urge to gnash her admittedly impressive set of teeth together and instead sent the lanky form behind her a dark look, trying to summon the patience that he so clearly did not have.
"Look," she told him, trying to sound reasonable in spite of how grating his whining had been for the past three days, "I told you before we left Virenya that it was going to be a long trip. And a flat one. I told you to bring something to keep yourself occupied."
Her heart-brother sent her an offended look. "I'm not a child," he claimed (completely untruthfully based on the premise of their current conversation.) "I am perfectly capable of amusing myself." Blaze was about to ask if he'd recently evolved into someone capable of doing just that without her noticing when he groaned and spun in a circle, long arms reaching up towards the very blue and open sky. "But it's all flat. And boring. And there are too many flowers."
"But you like flowers," Blaze commented mildly, plucking a pink blossom with her tail as she walked and deftly tossed it towards his face.
"I like flowers when there are other things to do as well," Gabe corrected his heart-sister, not missing a beat as he caught the pretty bloom and tucking it neatly behind his ear, anchored by his scruffy blonde hair. "When they're the only thing around? Not so much."
He wasn't going to be placated, that much was obvious and Blaze did in fact sigh then. She turned her keen eyes towards the horizon, assessed the angle of the sun and then made the only decision she could that would end up in some peace from his bored complaints, at least for a little while. "Anor City isn't far away - a couple of hours on foot, maybe." She flicked her tail at him, grinning a little in spite of her previous aggravation - he really was so predictable sometimes. "Bet you we can run it in under one?"
Gabe's blue eyes lit up and, just like that, she was reminded of how they were two sides of the same soul. Because the fiery, competitive light that burst into flames in his eyes was oh so similar to the furnace that often burned within hers. Filled with affection, her tail lashed behind her and she settled her weight so that it rested on her palms, rather than on her knuckles as it had before. "Do I need to give you a headstart, oh two-legged one?"
"You insult me," he said with a sniff, but the tall young man was already jigging on the spot in obvious anticipation. "Three, two, one..."
And then they were off - a tall, lanky, golden-topped blur and a shorter, more crouched, fiery one that ran on all fours. All that was left behind was some dust, the lingering echoes of Gabe's excited whoops and one pink flower drifting slowly to the ground...
- - - -
Predictably - given the fact that she could run on all fours whereas he was confined to two-legged motion - Blaze won. And Gabe was equally predictably unhappy about that. With infuriating smugness, she was waiting for him in the gatehouse leading into the city when he finally caught up, panting a little and glaring at his Soulmate.
"I'm sure you cheat," he said grumpily, the impact of the accusation somewhat ruined by the way he was gasping for air.
"Yes, dear," Blaze replied complacently, sitting back on her haunches and picking some specks of dust out of the fur on her chest. "Keep telling yourself that." She looked up, eyes bright and amused, clearly about to rub his face in it a little bit more...but then she did the best equivalent of a frown that her inhuman face could muster, squinting over his shoulder. "Hey," she said, distracting him from whatever tirade he was building up to. "I know that Spinda..." Ignoring the way her own human partner's head shot up, she concentrated on just being glad that Soulmates could communicate so easily with each other. "Mickey. Mickey!" She waved - both with one long arm and her equally long tail. "Over here!"

Her mother treated her less like a helpless little girl, which was a nice change. If any of her siblings were around as well, they focused less on tripping her up and more on listening to her stories of travel. Even her father, when she rarely saw him, gave her a little more attention than he ever had before. As long as she kept up the image that she could very easily take care of herself, they were proud of her.
Unfortunately, she didn't stop by often -- usually only returning when there was a contest that she wanted to participate in. Besides that, she was off and determined to see the world beyond the city she already knew.
It was good to be back.
Even if it was only for a couple days. The contest hall had hosted a large competition for the higher-caliber coordinators, and even if she was nowhere near in their league she wasn't going to miss it. Even sitting in the stands and watching the performances thrilled her. Oh, what she wouldn't give to be like that one day!
It didn't last more than a morning, though. And then it was over, and Aria was planning to head out. Probably the next day. Which left the afternoon to lounge about the city and try not to get into too much trouble.
And she was managing. She'd only tripped over one curb, stumbled over her own feet twice, and nearly lost her balance twice. Not bad for navigating rush hour traffic, the girl mused. She'd certainly done worse.
A while of that and she found herself craving some fresh, open air. So away from the center of the bustle she headed, her little Spinda bouncing ahead. Soon the city gates were in sight, and a few minutes later they'd nearly cleared them.
Mickey was still a bit ahead of Aria, twirling a bit in the soft grass beyond the gate, when something caught his attention. A cal-- oh! However he'd managed to miss the large Infernape waving and calling was beyond him, but no matter. A spark of recognition crossed his face.
"Blaze~!" He called out, running over with as little of a stagger as he could manage. "Haven't see you in a while! What's up?"
"Eh? Hey, Mickey!" Aria blinked in surprised when suddenly her soulmate darted out of sight, and she broke into a run to keep up. "Wait uuup!" As soon as she'd passed the gate she could see them; Mickey running towards blond-haired boy and his Infernape. A duo that she knew well.
"Hey, Gabe!" She called out, heading in their direction. Then she stopped -- and nearly fell flat on her face for lack of adjustment to the sudden loss of momentum. She tried to pretend like it didn't happen, though, and smiled brightly. "It's been a while."

"And you call me easily distracted," Gabe grumbled half-heartedly about his Soulmate's attention being snagged so easily but, really, he could hardly talk himself. Because when a spinda Soulmate came teetering over with surprising rapidity, he realised that he too knew its shape and form. So, sure, he couldn't well what Blaze was saying to the other Soulmate (though he knew her well enough to recognise the animated tail-waving and the way in which her head-flame sparked excitedly that generally went along with telepathic communication) but he himself was already looking for the Spinda's partner, someone of whom he was rather fond himself.
"Mickey, my boy," Blaze was saying warmly, resisting the urge to lope forwards and dole out the usual hearty cuff and hug combo she used to greet people that she liked. It wasn't that she disliked Mickey that prevented her from doing so though, far from it, simply that she didn't want to knock the smaller, decidedly more wobbly pokemon over. She, like Gabe, could be rather too enthusiastic sometimes. Instead, she settled for waving her tail at him and sitting back on her haunches so that she could look down at him. "I'm not surprised you haven't seen us in a while - that human of mine keeps us hopping from place to place and, since it's not as if he has anything that knows Fly yet, we're on the road a lot." Speaking of Gabe... "Hey," she said, leaning in conspiratorially and pointing discretely with her tail towards where she saw Mickey's human coming over, "just so you know, I apologise for him in advance..." She knew how her heart-brother got around pretty faces after all...
Indeed, Aria's was one of the prettiest that Gabe knew and the young man grinned automatically when he saw the younger human coming his way. "Aria, sweetheart, it's been far too long since I've seen that face of yours," he said with his usual good-natured extravagance - flattery-laced, but genuinely meant (at least in that moment.) "I don't know how you live with the guilt of condemning me to darkness and despair every time you take yourself out of my life." The co-ordinator was an interesting one, beautiful and friendly and all kinds of interesting. The two had met during Gabe's brief, disastrous 'I WANT TO BE A CO-ORDINATOR!' phase and it wasn't her skill so much that had enchanted him but the fact that she genuinely didn't seem to be interested in him.
Gabe being Gabe, he had of course taken that as a challenge and, ever since, had flirted even more outrageously with the younger girl each time their paths crossed. This, of course, was more amusing for some than for others. Blaze sighed and put her face briefly in her paws. "One day," she grumbled, "he will grow out of being quite so mortifying. Or so I keep telling myself..."
