The plan had been to leave at first light, borne upwards into the sky by the strong wings of her Soulmate. The plan had been to leave Miragova Town, to follow the Cobalt River to the sea. The plan had been not to let anything stand in her way.
...plans, however, had a nasty habit of being scuppered.
"Rin, I don't think I can fly in this."
It was lucky for the pair that Hermes' communication was telepathic rather than relying on sound waves, for they would have surely been stolen away by the vicious winds before they reached Hana Eirenne's ears. The childhood nickname that her Soulmate used grabbed her attention easily enough, however, and the severe line of her full mouth set in a grave line as she tilted her head up towards the maelstrom in the sky. What met her gaze were roiling clouds, thunderous and full-bellied, with lightning flickering in their stomachs.
"No, Hermes," was her quiet response, "and I wouldn't want you to try." Even her partner's broad wings would risk being stolen from him in the storm that had seemingly sprung up out of nowhere in the past hour. When she'd first awoken, with dawn's pale light only newly tickling the horizon with its fingers, the sky had been clear enough. But when she'd readied her bags with swift, practiced economy and headed up to the room of the hotel in which she'd been staying...
"That's Miragova for you," Hermes commented, ruffling his feathers in a rare sign of displeasure and blinking those red eyes of his...well, owlishly for lack of a better word. "Even if the winds weren't so high, I don't like the look of those clouds. A storm is on its way and even I can't outfly lightning" He clicked his beak and glanced over towards his human partner, who was still staring gravely up towards the stormy sky. "Come, Rin, we should wait inside before--."
As if it had been waiting to make a mockery of his warning, it was then and only then that the heavens opened and the Noctowl made a distinctly unimpressed noise at the deluge that drenched them rapidly. He ducked his head and mantled his wings, spreading one out so that it served as at least a vague umbrella for his human's very red head.
"Well then," Rin said, sounding remarkably calm for someone whose plans had just been ruined by the weather, "I suppose we shall be staying at least a little bit longer." She tucked a sodden strand of ruby-coloured hair behind one ear and, with an air of unruffled practicality, shouldered her duffel bag again.
After all, nothing fazed Rin.
The crowded lobby of the hotel didn't appeal to Rin and she wasn't about to pay to use her room again, so she and her Noctowl Soulmate went outside to wait underneath a stretched awning of a nearby shop. "The rain should stop soon enough," she said quietly to Hermes, who was absently preening himself. "Storms pass, it is in their nature."
"Soon, hopefully," he mumbled around a beakful of feathers. "We've lost enough time as it is."
"Patience, Hermes..." was all his human said in her soft, peaceful voice, reaching over without looking at him to smooth her fingers over the spot just over his eye feathers that she knew he enjoyed having rubbed. "We'll leave whenever we leave."
Outside the scanty protection offered by the awning, the rain continued to fall...

Whispered the man as he looked into the sky that bellowed with thunder. Lightening shot from the sky, striking the ground as rain poured from the sky. Storms always brought back bad memories for Genji. They made him feel, disabled. He could hardly hear anything, and thunder was no exception. He wasn't sure what he was missing out on. He was told that it sounded like rumbling. But of course, Genji understood that. The sky looked as if it was imploding, and then the remnants of whatever was left was floating to the ground. Genji didn't really think so much about these things when the opportunities presented themselves. Genji was unsure if he really liked this place, even if it was a safe haven for his kind.
Genji was convinced that this area was simply not a decent place. The constant storms and rain made it hard to pass through this region. Thats all Genji was doing, passing through. Without a home, without a purpose, all he had left to do was explore the region and meet new people to peak his interest. This wasn't much of a life to live, however it was a life that he recognized as his. Things weren't going to get better, and all he had left in this world was himself and people. Yes, people. Genji was convinced that the jewel of this world was the people that inhabited it. They varied so much that Genji was quite entertained by their presence and how they interacted with each other. Honestly, Genji was enticed by other humans. Some may question Genji's methods because of this. If he loved humans so much, then why does he attempt to attack them with questions and make them feel uncomfortable? Why would he try to hit on women he had no chance with, nonetheless ones 6 or so years younger than him? Simple, when he saw an opportunity, he seized it. He wasn't a "get drunk every other night and forget everything I did" sort of guy. He was a, "Find someone. Get their information. Get whatever the hell I can walk away with. Walk away." kind of guy.
Realizing that he couldn't just pass through this area, he went to go find some people. So, without any sort of jacket or coat, he walked through the streets of the city as water poured down onto him. Genji saw an awning in the distance, and nonetheless a Noctowl and a woman under it. Genji continued to walk towards the awning, and as he loked at the unidentified woman he quickly ran analysis through his mind. He could tell very little about her. He guessed that the Pokemon in which she was by was her soulmate, seeing as how their bond was strong. She was speaking, too, but Genji was too far away to read her lips. As Genji neared her, he took a step under the awning. Sometimes you don't realize that you are soaking wet until you are in an environment when you are no longer being pummeled by water. Of course, that very well applied here.
If Genji was correct and that was her soulmate, then he had to think of what knowledge he could draw from that. Soulmates are carbon copies of the personality of their human counterpart, Genji knew that as much as the next person. Noctowl was intelligent and focused, thats all he could deduce. Maybe she was the same. However, Genji always was shrouded in doubt when trying to make judgments on people based on their supposed soulmate. Genji was a shifter, and whenever he shifted as a kid he was very.. destructive. He had defied what his shifted form was when he was just playing innocent. He knew very well that people could be very unlike their soulmates in the way that they had the ability to act however they liked. Needless to say, Genji is someone that took that far too seriously. As Genji approached the woman, he spoke in his usual manner. The same manner that would be distorted to fit Genji's needs and help him interact with Rin.
"Hello there, dear. Shouldn't you be inside? Its clearly not pleasant out here. You don't need me to tell you that, miss." Rin was known for being a patient woman - this was evident in the way that her eyes had gone half-hooded and distant, the way her arms folded loosely over her serviceable long, travelling coat, the way that she didn't seem to need any sort of book or music or activity of any sort to help her while away the wait. Beside her, Hermes - who was just as practical as she in many ways - had tucked his head under his wing and had, to all visible intents and purposes, gone to sleep.
Waiting didn't bother her, not when the sky would eventually clear. That much she had faith in. Rin was not a woman who needed constant distractions or activities to keep her from sinking into restless fretfulness; instead, her serenity practically exuded itself from every pore, the way that she was clearly calmly and patiently waiting for the storm to pass. And, until it did, she was content to just watch the heavy raindrops falling beyond the shelter afforded to them by the useful awning. No other distractions necessary.
It seemed, however, that she was going to get one anyway.
Rin's odd-coloured gaze slid over to the side when motion necessitated it and her eyes focussed on the stranger. And, though she was normally difficult to surprise in any way, the sight of this man was enough to cause shock to curdle oh so briefly in her stomach. Because where was his Soulmate? Where was his other half? Her eyes skittered briefly over him, wondering whether it was something small and therefore hidden on his person, but logic soon caught up with her. It seemed she had a Shifter on her hands.
That was enough to make her gaze sharpen with a clinically keen sort of interest. She knew they existed in theory, but they were rare in the population of Aniferna, were they not? And Rin had certainly never met one of them herself. So, although the absence of a Soulmate incited an automatic sort of queasiness in the pit of her stomach, she did her best to quell it - it was not a logical reaction, she told herself, not when it was a well-documented alternative to the way in which she herself had been born.
(There was, however, a quick glance towards the sleeping Hermes' that, irrationally or not, did something to calm her a little once she was reassured that she still had him.)
Her attention returning to the Shifter (distantly, she wondered into what pokemon he could transform and, really, didn't that highlight how much of a first impression tended to be based on the visible clues that a person's Soulmate gave you?) Rin raised a single, red eyebrow at him.
"I am indeed rather capable of noting the state of the weather for myself," she said - not quite coolly, but with a distant sort of levelness to her voice that was hardly encouraging if one liked affable, openly amiable people. "But I'm hoping that it will pass soon enough so that my Soulmate and I can depart without too much delay to our original plans." She gestured with one laconic hand - first to the downpour beyond the awning and then back towards the hotel in which she'd stayed the night. "That way is too wet in which to fly. And back there is too crowded and noisy to bear." Her slim shoulders rose and fell in an artless, effortless shrug. "This seemed as good a compromise as any while we waited out the storm."
That red brow rose a few degrees more and the barest hint of a smirk tickled at the edges of her red mouth. "And it is 'Hana', not 'dear.'" That, she had felt, required correcting.

He had an anaylctic mind, and he could not help the natural urge to want to think so much about this sort of thing. Sadly, in the world that Genji existed in, you cannot just sit there and think of responses and really go over what you are going to say. Instead, Genji had to be swift on his feet and try to analyze what he could and then try to use any information he had gathered to speak. Genji had much previous experience talking to people, and considered himself quite good at it. However, many wouldn't see him as any sort of good social communicator. Ignoring the social norms, he would act like this.
Yes, he would act like this. This woman in which he confronted was clearly not going to expect. Perhaps this is the reason why Genji acted like this. The fact that anything here was ever predictable would not be entertaining enough. So, he acted strange, especially around people that he thought would take it oddly. Immediately, upon approaching this female, he had attempted to make a judgment by her soul mate. What he didn't understand is the fact that perhaps she would have tried to do the same. Genji was no idiot, he could understand the fact that lacking a soul mate allowed him to hide whom he really was. He rarely admired this and gave it any due credit. If a Honchkrow was on his shoulder at all times, people would see him darker than he acted. In fact, being a shifter was perfect. He was unaware how others saw the being of a shifter, however he knew that it was a little rare and some people may have been a tad bit scared of him.
However, this woman was anything but scared of him. Her eyebrow raised, and Genji continued his unaltered gaze boringly into her eyes. So she claimed to being able to see the state of the weather. Of course, this was just a remark in regard to Genji lightly rearding the fact that she should be inside. Genji previously didn't even note on the fact that the inside of the building seemed very crowded. Genji was glad that he was given a hint so soon in this conversation. She would rather stand out here in the storm, protected by a shabby awning than be inside where it was bustling , yet warm. This in itself was very little information to provide Genji. He could not force upon her a giant crowd just to make her feel uncomfortable. Instead, he waited, and listened.
Genji continued the reading of the woman's lips, getting her entire message as it came about. Original plans? Very much like Genji, it was clear that she hoped to depart from this town. Genji was unsure for her reasons, but surely she wasn't running from anything. Genji approached her so oddly, if she was departing this city for any reasons regarding Unifi she wouldn't just stand there casually. Genji had approached her so strangely, almost like a member of Unifi itself. Or, he could have appeared as a victim of Unifi's soul mate killing. But, seeing as how that really hadn't reached this area much, Genji considered the fact that maybe she did suspect he was a shifter.
Genji chuckled lightly as she stated that this was not but a compromise. Not that it was funny or anything, but something about it made Genji laugh. Furthermore, she then spoke that she should be reffered to as what looked like (to Genji's lip reading) "Hana" and not dear. Genji would disregard that she ever told him that. Of course, he would use the name , but only when mixing in the name dear. Even if she didn't like it, it was within his hopes to force upon the nickname to anyone female that he met. "Hana, dear, you wish to wait 'til the end of the storm under this cover?" Genji spoke, trying to include some hint of him actually caring. "However, if you do hope to sit here and wait all that time. . . would you give me the pleasure of accompanying you whilst you wait? I, too, have my flight delayed." All in all, Hana Eirenne was not someone who typically attracted people's attention or, indeed, their voluntarily willingness to initiate contact. It wasn't that she necessarily rebuffed people or was even actively unpleasant...more that the walls she put up between herself and the rest of the world were always rather tangible. People could feel the way she tended to politely hold them at a distance, an act written in her pleasant but non-committal smiles, in the way that she was silent more than she spoke, in that she only ever gave sparingly of herself and there was a point beyond which she was completely closed off. To everyone. Even, to some degree, her Soulmate.
The look she gave the stranger was a searching one, her gaze assessing and analytical all at once. Maybe the Noctowl Soulmate gave it away, but she could be quite coolly logical a lot of the time, especially when it came to meeting new people. And, of all places, she hadn't been expecting to be approached by a stranger in as chilly and damp a setting as the one she was currently ensconced in. Was he too waiting for the weather to alleviate? Was he looking for the distraction that Rin herself had not needed?
Was he looking for trouble by insisting on calling her 'dear'?
That laugh of his drew him a wry look, though not an insulted one. Her own demonstrative signs of amusement were kept rather more closely to her chest, but she was not someone who still didn't enjoy the pleasant sound of other people laughing for all that she was a rather taciturn soul herself. The wry look turned sharper though when that 'dear' made a reappearance, albeit in congruence with her own name, but his refusal to truly rid his speech of it incited a certain wariness within her. It spoke of condescension, the word did, and she was a quietly proud creature, one who disliked the element of patronisation that went along with the moniker.
Still, above and beyond all of that, she was polite unless she was directly required not to be, so one correction was all that she allowed herself. Any further use of 'dear' beyond that only harmed her opinion of the man, not the woman herself. She nodded towards the sky to the west of them, where the stormheads seemed to thin out to mist and mugginess. "I doubt it will last all morning," she said quietly. The electricity in the air and the humidity also were already threatening to make her thick hair unmanageable, so it was with deft and economical fingers that she reached up to begin to twine the red strands into a utilitarian braid. The actions didn't require much thought or attention, so it left her dark gaze free to still stay resting contemplatively upon the stranger - who, she noticed clinically, still hadn't traded his name in return for her own. That alone bore storing away for later, the fact that he too didn't seem to give much of himself away.
"It's a free porch," she said, amiably enough as she nodded to the empty space between them. She herself was leaning against one pillar that provided support for the awning, legs crossed idly at the ankles, while Hermes drowsed and made low noises in his sleep. "Stay if you want, though you'd probably be warmer inside."
It seemed to escape her notice that her advice could have been applicable to herself, but Rin had always preferred the quiet. Until now, it had just been her, the quiet noise of Hermes' breathing and the sound of the falling rain. Company was a novelty she had not been expecting and she was neither averse to or actively in favour of it. Instead, she watched with her characteristic patience where everything was concerned, fingers still moving swiftly and neatly to tie off the end of the long, functional braid. It wasn't particularly a look that suited her, but she was as far from vain as you could get and, besides. It was better than static-born frizz.

She didn't seem too happy by anything that Genji had done thus far, and of course Genji could see why. It didn't take any sort of great observing to take note on the fact that Genji's impression in which he set so 'recklessly' was not received in the best manner. Genji didn't expect to get the best reaction, however the figurative scale in which measured possibilities within his mind, he figured that one of two things would happen upon approaching the woman. The first option, the one that was most desirable, was that his greeting would be received joyously and she would only go with what Genji said. Genji considered this the response of the simple mind, the response that didn't analyze what he was attempting to achieve.
It was no mystery that Genji was being shut out from the mind of Hana, and Genji could understand that far too well. Sadly, Genji was far too good at tricking his mind into believing that everything was going to be okay. In fact, he had himself believing that the reaction in which his conversant gave was better than anything else. He told himself that this made it interesting, and for that, his interest in trying to get more out of Hana peaked. Genji couldn't too sharply change his view on Hana. It would be to obvious that he would do whatever it took to stand here and gain anything he could. It had to seem natural. Rather, it had to seem as natural as Genji could be perceived. Genji's smirk disappeared slowly as Hana spoke of the "free porch". He also broke away his boring gaze, shifting his eyes to the soulmate that was beside the woman, watching her in the corner of his eyes to notice any words she might speak.
Genji wanted to bring back the smirk as well as make some silly remark on the fact that her advice worked so well on herself, equally if not more than it applied to Genji. Genji couldn't imagine that she didn't already notice that. Genji saw it as a hypocrisy, however he was always under the impression that every human being was a hypocrit in their own way, regardless of who they are. Genji had previously noticed that he was being analyzed by the eyes of the woman. They were both clueless of each other, hence how fun this was. Enigma shrouded each of them. Genji could give her his name, he saw no error in that at this point.
Genji could not imagine this female as a member of Unifi. "I figured I might as well show some form of courtesy, miss." Genji looked to the woman, whom was braiding her hair. Genji didn't know how to see this, however he forced himself not to overanalyze it. Genji wanted to see it as a sign of being nervous, but he couldn't. It would be a... "long shot" to make that conclusion. Genji took a single step towards the space that Hana had gestured to.
But, speaking of courtesy. "By the way, I'm Genji Riakai. I'm my own soul mate, if you haven't figured it out, dear." Genji didn't mean to sound so spontaneous, but he didn't see any error in this. Despite how rare shifters were and how he would be murdered by any Unifi. Perhaps he thought it would suggest that he somewhat trusted her already. Genji was not that oblivious, and he did indeed notice the fact that this woman hated "dear". Genji figured that eventually she would just let it go. Genji extended his right hand for the woman to shake.
"Its a pleasure to meet you, Hana." Genji kept his eyes on her, ready to read anything she spoke.
