The Samurott peered intently into the shadows, sniffing at the thick, musty air that drifted out of the entrance to the cavern. The cave mouth itself was little more than a crack in the steep, ragged side of the mountain, but there could be no doubt that it was one of the many entrances into the Stone Labyrinth, the vast, maze-like network of tunnells and caves that ran under Aniferna's Girdle, and which should, hopefully, lead them through to the other side - at least according to Logan's Town Map. Still dissatisfied, Riverine turned her majestic head to look at her trainer, who was standing patiently by her side. "So, you are resolved on this course?"
"Hmm," was the laconic yet assenting reply. Logan disliked wasting words when the answer could be conveyed through a simple sound or gesture. The dark-haired tamer was giving their baggage, which only really consisted of Logan's backpack, containing their Map, a few Poke Balls, some Potions and some road supplies, the final going over, tightening straps and packing their items as tightly as possible. It would be a long, dark journey through Aniferna's underworld, and though both Logan and Riverine had built up a tolerance for hardship they would need all the nutrition and medication they could lay hands on.
Riverine turned to eye the cave mouth again, her gaze mistrustful. "In all the times we ventured out here to train, we never went into the Stone Labyrinth."
"Don't tell me you're frightened," Logan snorted, bumping his Soulmate's shoulder softly. Riverine had reared up onto her hind legs in order to traverse the narrow mountain path, and stood almost as tall as her human partner. The Samurott smiled in spite of herself; regardless of Logan's grim and unsocial demeanor, it was just the kind of encouraging gesture she had come to expect from him. Whenever she had been dispirited or lacking in confidence, he had made it his business to cheer her up and get her up and going again. It was a favour she hadn't been given cause to return just yet, for Logan himself hardly ever seemed to display worry or self-doubt.
"Not at all," she replied dryly, the corners of her mouth still twitching. "I'm just curious as to why you'd rather go under the mountains than over them."
Logan shrugged non-commitally. "I guess it's a whim. In any case, we're just as likely to encounter powerful opponents down here than if we'd scaled the peaks. Might even get a catch or two." The trainer tapped a finger against the lone Poke Ball that was strapped to his belt. "It'll be a good chance to see what this little one's capable of, too." The aforementioned 'little one' was a Chingling that the duo had run across in the Girdle's foothills, on the very day they had crossed Ithycis Lake for the first time.
The bell-like Pokemon had been hopping after them for some distance, following them from the lower latitudes up to the point where the steep paths began; at that point, Logan had put an end to the charade by pulling out a Ball and catching the jingling creature. He had no misgivings about it; from the way it had stood there and let itself by captured, the Chingling oviously wanted to come along with them, entranced by who knew what. All the same, the ease of the capture bothered Logan; he would have preferred it if a battle had been required beforehand, at least so he could have worked out just what the odd-looking Pokemon could do.
He had named the Chingling Knell. The Pokemon seemed to respond quite cheerfully to her new name, her demeanor completely at odds with the name's connotations. Riverine had wondered if her trainer intended to give all his Pokemon such forbidding names, and been secretly glad that she had been born knowing her own name.
The Samurott frowned. "Is that wise, Logan? It seems more like a chance for whatever lives down there to make mincemeat of the poor thing." She knew first-hand how demanding Logan could be of his parterns and of himself, and didn't want their younger friend to be thrust into an impossble situation. Who knew what lurked down there in the darkness?
"Small stature doesn't equal weakness," Logan returned severely. His gaze softened, almost imperceptibly. "Besides, if things get rough you're more than capable of taking over for her."
Riverine grinned appreciatively.
Logan Magwitch nodded curtly at the cave entrance. "Shall we?"
"Lead on," his Soulmate replied.
One after the other, they squeezed through the crack, and began the long journey to the far side of Aniferna.

The Graveler had heard the travelers coming for what had seemed like an eternity. After all, the Labyrinth's caverns carried sound for a while thanks to the strong echo effect they had. He had remained disguised as a boulder for a while, but hearing that the human was coming ever closer, decided that they weren't going to turn back, so he needed to defend his turf.
However, the sandy ground underneath his feet shifted a little, causing him to stumble. A little velvety head poked up from under the ground just then, kicking up a little cloud of dust around them.
"Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to startle you!" the little Drilbur pushed herself up out of the hole and brushed herself off with her large, shovel-like claws. "What's goin--mmph!"
"Shut up!" the Graveler seized the Drilbur, muffling the talkative mole Pokemon with a large, stony hand. With that, he pointed toward the bend in the cave, where the light from the outside cast the shadows of the human and the Samurott against the stone wall. With that, he placed the Drilbur back down on the ground and pulled in his limbs, again beginning to resemble a boulder, before rolling himself forward, hoping to catch the intruding pair in his Rollout.

They could only have been proceeding along the passage for a handful of minutes. The cave was growing a little darker with every step they took, though the light coming from the entrance was intense enough that they should be able to see for a while yet; it cast long shadows on the rock walls, in crooked, primordial shapes, as the Samurott and her human Soulmate made their way deeper into the Labyrinth.
When darknessfell outside, they would either have to rely on Riverine's senses of sound and smell to keep going, or simply buckle down to rest for the night, and hope that the morning would reveal some other source of light; a crack in the ceiling perhaps, or an exit into a mountain valley, which they could briefly use to get their bearings. As it was, Logan was determined to cover as much ground as he could during the hours of daylight; now he had finally embarked on his journey, he wasn't about to be dissuaded from it, not even by the dark beneath the world.
The dark-haired trainer strode purposefully down the passage, seemingly unhindered by the boulders and roots that choked their uneven path. He was well used to mountainous terrain by now. Riverine, who was bringing up the rear, was under a little more difficulty, as she had four legs instead of two to keep an eye on. The low ceiling would not permit her to stand at her full height on two legs. Logan got by well enough by bending his back slightly, but the Samurott was unfortunately not as flexible.
Suddenly, just as the were approaching a bend in the tunnel, the Soulmate stiffened, grinding to a halt. It took Logan a moment or two to realize he was marching on his own. When he eventually realized the sound of Riverine's footsteps had stopped, he doubled back. The trainer looked curiously at the Samurott from under his heavy, piercing-laden brows. "What is it?"
When Riverine spoke, it was in a low whisper, her muzzle barely moving at all. "I'm sure I heard something. Further down the passage. Voices." Not human voices, at that; Pokemon voices. A high-pitched, chattering one, and a lower, laconic one, almost a growl. The Samurott couldn't begin to guess what species each voice might belong to, but that concern was second to the fact that the duo might be about to walk into an ambush.
Logan followed his Soulmate's glowering gaze to the bend in the cave, his face unreadable, then gave a shrug. "It's not like you to jump at mere noises." With that, Logan picked up his pace once more, only turning once to beckong Riverine to follow. The Samurott sighed; she was certain that if only her partner was less cock-sure all the time, they wouldn't keep walking into trouble. In spite of her misgivings, Riverine set off after her trainer, only to freeze up once more.
"Wait!" the Samurott hissed, much more urgently this time. "Can you hear that?"
Logan had been about to issue a retort, but something in his partner's tone persuaded him to stop and listen; and this time, he too heard the low, rumbling noise that was coming round the bend - and growing steadily louder. This time, he replied in just as low a whisper. "...Yeah. Hold still."
Logan's eyes darted to the bend; it was still enough of a distance between it and the duo that whoever - or whatever - was approaching would have to slow down to make the turn. In this kind of environment, they were more likely to run across Ground- or Rock-type creatures, which his Soulmate was more than capable of dealing with.
He edged a little closer to Riverine, placing an encouraging hand on her shoulder as he looked her straight in the eye. "...When I give the order, launch a Water attack at the bend in the tunnell. I'll duck out of your way, give you a clear shot."
Riverine nodded curtly. Logan did the same, and went back to staring intently at the bend in the passage. A thin trickle of sweat ran from his temple down the side of his face as he strove to estimate how far their attacker still had to go. When the rumbling had reached its loudest yet, Logan decided it was time.
"Now!"
He crouched low, and Riverine reared up, the light of battle in her determined eyes. With a challenging bark that rattled the cave walls and send dust and pebbles showering down on them, the Samurott let loose a powerful Water Pulse. The attack shot down the tunnel, certain to collide with whatever was coming round the bend.

The Nidoking led the way, his human following close behind. They decided they were going to be a little adventurous and go exploring in the Labyrinth today.
Of course, when it came to these two, 'they' often meant Lili. She wanted to try something different, and didn't want to take the boat across Ithycis Lake, nor did she want to risk the cold of climbing over the mountains. So, she took the last of the three choices. She just knew they would have to be careful lest they wander too deep into the mountain and come face to face with a boiling pool of lava. She was a poison trainer for a reason--she didn't much care for the hot temperatures.
/So, Nero. What do you want to do when we get to Miragova?/ Lili asked as the Nidoking stared down a Geodude that almost wanted to try attacking him. /I hear that they've opened a new restaurant there within the past couple weeks. Their sushi is supposed to be top-notch./
/You know I don't like sushi,/ the Nidoking replied flatly, /Now, stir-fry, I'll eat until I can't eat anymore. Especially if it's Corphish stir-fry./
/Oh, right. I forgot, you're a pickier eater than I am~/ she teased, patting the hulking beast gently. /That's okay, because I'm pretty sure they have stir-fry and other things, too~/
The sound of voices a short distance off made Lili freeze and Nero growl. However, when the Nidoking relaxed, Lili assumed it was just another person pressing his luck within the Labyrinth and not some Unifi trying to ambush them. The Nidoking then turned to confirm Lili's suspicion. /Well, let's go ahead and see what another trainer is doing in here./
/After you~/ Lili replied sweetly, watching as Nero continued forward. He then heard what appeared to be the sound of a Pokemon, probably ready to challenge the pair. Then came the order for a Water Pulse. A good choice, seeing as everything in the mountain would have at least some kind of weakness to water. It made her slightly upset that she didn't have a single water move on her person. Oh, well. She could make up for it. Nero knew Ice Beam, and plenty of fighting moves, so she could make up for a lack of water moves easily.
When they rounded a turn, she spotted the trainer, with a Samurott. And...was that a Graveler? barreling straight toward them.
/If that thing breaks through the Water Pulse, Nero, slam it with a Brick Break,/ Lili commanded, and the Nidoking nodded, preparing himself to smash a rock if necessary.
"What brings a trainer with a Samurott down into the Labyrinth?" she asked nonchalantly, attempting to make small talk while watching the Graveler come ever closer. "Couldn't you just take a quick surf over Ithycis Lake?"[/style][style= border-left: 6px solid #242324; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; font-family: verdana; line-height: 12px; padding: 5px; color: #737373; background-color: #0d0d0d; border-top: 1px dashed;]tag: logan~ notes: woo! credits: keikei @ BTN[/style] |
